Jaxon is an energetic 4 year old boy. He loves tacos, playing with his friends, and has an imagination that only a 4 year old can have. In August, after weeks of headaches, Jaxon awoke with a severe headache and was taken to ER. A CT scan showed a 6cm mass at the back of his head. The mass was putting pressure on the ventricles preventing them from draining and causing hydrocephalus. He was transported to Blanks Children's Hospital and went immediately into surgery.
The mass turned out to be benign. Praise God! Since the surgery, Jaxon has since been having issues with excessive swelling and fluid build up at the back of his head and occasional headaches. The doctors prescribed three rounds of steroids which gave Jaxon some pretty adorable 'steroid cheeks' and made some of his clothes not fit as well, but it only temporarily helped with the swelling concerning the doctors.
Jaxon's doctors felt it was worth a trip to Mayo Clinic to have them check things out. He will be traveling to Mayo the end of October.
UPDATE: Mayo's MRI showed, not one, but three pockets of fluid. as well as a remnant of the tumor. The initial surgery wasn't successful and due to uncontrolled scar tissue growth, 3 of the 4 ventricles were not working. The beginning of November, Jaxon underwent another surgery similar to the first. They opened his scull, removed the remnant of the tumor, opened up the scar tissue and drained the pockets of fluid. At his 4 week follow up MRI, they said everything looked good! Jaxon is having some memory issues that they feel will resolve itself as inflammation goes down.
